Abu Dhabi #8 The Grand Mosque

After an exhausting picnic day at Corniche we had plans to visit the Grand Mosque or Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Designed by Syrian Architect Yousef Abdelky, the mosque covers an area of 12 hectares. The project was started by late president of UAE Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His final resting place is located on the grounds adjacent to the complex.

The mosque has two entries, one for people who have to pray and other for tourists. There is very strict checking of clothing. You can’t wear anything that exposes any part of your body. It has to be covered. Ladies have to cover their head. Ladies with western clothing were given an ‘abaya’ to wear.

We entered the mosque from the side and walked around to the front from where you get inside. You get a spectacular view of the entire place.

There is some immense amount of detailing that one will see inside the mosque.

The Mosque also harbours the worlds largest carpet inside the main hall for prayer.

The main beauty of mosque is seen at night when its lit up.

The Mosque is worth seeing. Its a work of art beyond beatiful.

Stay tuned for my last 2 days in UAE. Have a nice day. 🙂
